"Survivor" shows a quail trapped in a tumbleweed. I became fascinated with tumbleweeds during my sojourn working with students, teachers and community participants on a mural I designed and coordinated in Wichita Falls, Texas. When I did this work, I was thinking of the trapped quail as symbolic of refugees who have a hard time leaving an oppressive regime. This ceramic work is one of the first that I created in a raku firing; hence, the cracked surfaces and slightly charred appearance in places, which is desirable.
