"Memories of a Painted Town" is an 8'x11' indoor mural that I designed and created as a collaborative project with over 200 students at Jay Stream Middle School in Carol Stream, Illinois. It is a montage of familiar landmarks in Carol Stream, such as the Fountain in the foreground and Jay Stream Middle School itself with the Chicago skyline, Buckingham Fountain, and Lake Michigan with boats in the background. Its most special feature is the tile border created by me, the art teacher, Vicki LaMontagna, and students. The hand-made tiles are of flags of those students' varying ethnicities, favorite Chicago teams, nature images, pets, symbols, and foods that they love. The whole atmosphere is meant to be positive, joyous and uplifting. The title was one of many that students created and voted on.
