This 3-dimensonal montage is a narrative fantasy based upon Shakespeare's play, "The Merchant of Venice." The main focus is the gold, silver, or lead caskets that any potential suitor had to choose in order to win the hand of fair Portia, according to the will of her father. The lucky 'chooser' was young Bassanio, whose good friend Antonio borrowed several thousand ducats from a moneylender so that Bassanio could court Portia in style. The money lenter tried to exact a pound of Antonio's flesh because conditions prevailed that woud prevent him from paying back the monetary debt in a timely fashion. Love prevailed, however, and you'll find out how if you read the story. I was inspired to do this work having visited Venice three times and fell in love with its magic and mystery. I curated an exhibition this year titled "Chicago Artists Interpret Shakespeare As They Like It," and this was one of my works in the 39 artist-show at the Beverly Arts Center.
