"Positive Ripple Effect" was designed and created by me and by the art teacher, Vicki LaMontagna, and over 200 students from Jay Stream Middle School in Carol Stream, IL, as the second of two collaborative art projects. The subject of preserving plant and aquatic life in the Great Lakes has really been a concern of mine and I wanted these bright, capable students to 'take it on' with me. I began by creating several images in clay, such as turtles, eels, trout, Asian carp, and lake perch. The students helped to glaze them and created their minnows, frogs, toads, turtles, and rocks out of clay. A white cupped hand on the left holding plastic bottle tops and a black cupped hand on the right holding zebra mussels, both menaces to the Great Lakes, are a subtle way of illustrating this intent to conserve.
